Psalm 103:1-22 (ASV)
1 Bless Jehovah, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless his holy name.
2 Bless Jehovah, O my soul, And forget not all his benefits:
3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases;
4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; Who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
5 Who satisfieth thy desire with good things, So that thy youth is renewed like the eagle.
6 Jehovah executeth righteous acts, And judgments for all that are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways unto Moses, His doings unto the children of Israel.
8 Jehovah is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness.
9 He will not always chide; Neither will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins, Nor rewarded us after our iniquities.
11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is his lovingkindness toward them that fear him.
12 As far as the east is from the west, So far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
13 Like as a father pitieth his children, So Jehovah pitieth them that fear him.
14 For he knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust.
15 As for man, his days are as grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; And the place thereof shall know it no more.
17 But the lovingkindness of Jehovah is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, And his righteousness unto children’s children;
18 To such as keep his covenant, And to those that remember his precepts to do them.
19 Jehovah hath established his throne in the heavens; And his kingdom ruleth over all.
20 Bless Jehovah, ye his angels, That are mighty in strength, that fulfil his word, Hearkening unto the voice of his word.
21 Bless Jehovah, all ye his hosts, Ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.
22 Bless Jehovah, all ye his works, In all places of his dominion: Bless Jehovah, O my soul.
Goodness is a character of God! Psalm 103 is joyous praise, in which King David rises thankful acknowledgment for his personal blessings to a lively celebration of God’s gracious attributes, as not only intrinsically worthy of praise but as the sustainer of life. He concludes by invoking all creatures to unite in his song. We are part of the group that needs to praise Him.
When do you make the Lord the object of your praise? Sometimes, often, when you feel like it? Always? How do you describe the Lord? Through His word, His works in your life, or the evidence of who He is? We must sing of the goodness of the Lord always, constantly, and continuously.
In verse 3, David described the Lord God’s character as God Himself had revealed to Moses in Exodus 34:6.
This is the season to reflect and meditate on the goodness of God. How great is God’s faithful love towards you, verses 11-13 say God’s faithful love is as high as the heavens are above the earth-that is beyond our comprehension.
1st stanza lyrics of “the goodness of God” CeCe Winans “I love You, Lord. For Your mercy never failed me. All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands. From the moment that I wake up Until I lay my head. Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God. And all my life You have been faithful, and all my life You have been so, so good, with every breath that I am able Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God.
Thank God for His mercies towards us that are renewed daily, Lamentations 3:22-23.
We have all come through an unprecedented season and are still unsure of where we’re going but one thing is sure; we are held securely in the Lord’s hands from when we wake up and go to bed, all because of His faithfulness and goodness.
Mark 10:18 helps us understand that only God is good and only He can show us such indescribable goodness despite who we are.
Your song this season and onward should be God, You’re so good-You’re so good to me. Take a moment to think of God’s goodness, think of God’s blessings. As you think on the Lord’s goodness, bless the Lord with your soul, bless Him with your finances, bless the Lord with your family, bless the Lord with your lips, praise the Lord!
David understood the ongoing benefits of God’s loyal love for His people and that made David erupt in praise of God’s goodness, let that be you; erupt in praise for His benefits towards you.
God’s mercy flows from His goodness. The Lord would still be good even if He never showed mercy, for mercy is not obligatory according to Romans 9:14–24. Yet in His mercy, we see that He has purposed to be good in a distinct way to His people.
The evidence of God’s goodness is all around us in ways He sustains, preserves protects, and provides for us. Mark 10:18 says only the Father is good, appreciate the goodness of God and according to Psalm 145:5 meditate and speak of the goodness of God.
Shalom
