2 Kings 18-19
Imagine living within the city of Jerusalem during the siege of Sennacherib. He had already conquered the northern kingdom of Israel, and many of the fortified cities of southern Judea. Talk about a panic attack! Sennacherib’s armies were bloodthirsty, and they loved to torture, skinning people alive was one of their specialities, nailing the human skin to walls as a warning to others who might rebel against them.
Imagine yourself as the King of Judah, and you must decide what to do when the massive Assyrian army is outside your gates. Sennacherib’s threats were not idle.
You have lived through a no-win situation? You face extreme difficulty now. Sometimes, for whatever reason, we find ourselves at the end of ourselves, at the end of our resources, where few if any, can understand the personal despair and fear of the choices that must we must make.
King Hezekiah chose to take the written threats of Sennacherib’s General and spread them out before the Lord.
This is a very powerful visual! I can’t tell you how many times such letters have been placed, spread and surrendered before the Lord in this ministry and we’ve seen God move greatly on behalf of His daughters.
This is a good place to spread your collection or eviction notices, the threats of others, your divorce papers, your pink slip, medical report, or bankruptcy report. You could write down the situation and offer a prayer of desperation to the Lord. God defeated the dreaded Sennacherib, and He will defeat your enemies as well. Place the results in His hands for the rest of your life. Be ready to change when God makes He’s will know, He gave the Israelis a strategy and He will give you one. And prepare to praise and worship Him when you realize that the Lord God has delivered you in a truly unimaginable way. Have faith and pour out your heart to the Lord.
The prophet Isaiah sent word to Hezekiah that, because of Sennacherib’s blasphemous taunts about the God of Israel, the Lord Himself would fight for them and destroy Sennacherib and his armies.
As Psalm 139:7–12 reminds us, no one can hide from the Lord. One day as Sennacherib was worshipping in his god’s temple, his sons killed him with a sword 19:36–37. Confirming Isaiah’s prophecy.
Hezekiah’s passive victory over Sennacherib is an example of the Lord’s promise to fight for His people, Exodus 14:14; 1 Samuel 17:47. The Lord still seeks those who will honour Him so that He can show Himself strong on their behalf 2 Chronicles 16:9. The account of Sennacherib’s failed siege ends with this: “So the Lord saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and the hand of all others. He took care of them on every side” the Lord is still able to save and deliver you and use that written threat to His glory
Whatever that written threat is that have you running around looking for a solution need to be spread before the Lord, do so and pray like Hezekiah in 19:14-17 and watch what He’ll do for you.
Shalom
