1 Samuel 10:6-12 (AMP)
6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you mightily, and you will show yourself to be a prophet with them; and you will be turned into another man.
7 When these signs meet you, do whatever you find to be done, for God is with you.
8 You shall go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. You shall wait seven days until I come to you and show you what you shall do.
9 And when [Saul] had turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart, and all these signs came to pass that day.
10 When they came to the hill [Gibeah], behold, a band of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came mightily upon him, and he spoke under divine inspiration among them.
11 And when all who knew Saul before saw that he spoke by inspiration among the [schooled] prophets, the people said one to another, What has come over [him, who is nobody but] the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
12 One from that same place answered, But who is the father of the others? So it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
We’ve heard or said, “I didn’t recognise you,” I’ve had someone say to me when I decided to go to a smaller size “am so sorry, I didn’t know you were sick, are you okay now? You’re a shadow of your former self.” Imagine how I felt, instead of complement for losing weight, it was commiseration! Being told you’re unrecognisable may be positive or negative depending on the circumstances.
The best thing to happen to mankind that makes them unrecognisable is the Holy Spirit! The most important evidence of a spirit-filled person is the change and transformation in character and personality, with the development of the fruit of the Spirit as described in Galatians 5:22-23.
We always deceive ourselves into thinking we can change people but the only way a person can change is when God truly rests and dwells in them.
Verse 6 told us Saul will be changed into another man before it happened because the prophet knows that an encounter with the Lord never leaves anyone the same. Saul was so changed, people thought he was someone else. Notice that the anointing in Vs 1 preceded the change in Vs 6.
A new believer’s most concrete evidence of the outpouring and indwelling of the Holy Spirit in them is the ability to speak and pray in diverse tongues as exhibited on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4.
Just as another heart and personality transformed Saul from a peasant to a charismatic leader and made him unrecognisable in verse 9, so too can we be transformed from wilful, sinful lost souls to changed people of courage, boldness, spiritual zeal, seen in Acts 2:14-41.
We have friends and family members we wish will change, have you prayed for that change? Wilful wishing is meaningless without faith declarations.
Nobody can change anybody! Only God can according to Ezekiel 36:26 change a person’s heart from what it used to be to a brand new heart when they come to faith and are transformed by the Holy Spirit. When the Spirit of God comes upon us, we’re changed from glory to glory says 2 Corinthians 3:18, that’s when fear turns to boldness, timidity turns to courage, from lost to redeemed, from sick to healthy and from death to life only through the power of the Holy Spirit. We become unrecognizably transformed to a new creation according to 2 Corinthians 5:17, but only in Christ.
There is help available through the power of the Holy Ghost for us to be changed and be unrecognisable when we come with a broken and repentant heart. We must recognise and acknowledge that life keeps us hiding behind closed doors in fear and uncertainty just like the apostles in John 20:19-22 but after receiving the in-filling of the Holy Spirit, they were transformed into brave people.
When the Spirit of the Lord comes upon you literally, His mighty rush upon you will push out the old you and you’ll be changed suddenly, and He will endow you with the capacity to act in a manner that is far superior to your previous character and habits; you’ll begin to display energy, wisdom, and attribute worthy of an heir of the Father.
Shalom
