1 Kings 19:8-14 (AMP)
8 So he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and nights to Horeb, the mount of God.
9 There he came to a cave and lodged in it; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, What are you doing here, Elijah?
10 He replied, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken Your covenant, thrown down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I, I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11 And He said, Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord. And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake;
12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire [a sound of gentle stillness and] a still, small voice.
13 When Elijah heard the voice, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, What are you doing here, Elijah?
14 He said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts, because the Israelites have forsaken Your covenant, thrown down Your altars, and slain Your prophets with the sword. And I, I only, am left, and they seek my life, to destroy it.
We are people of questionnaires, we ask questions for many reasons, such as the need for knowledge, and many more.
Are you looking for God? Do you search Him here, there, and everywhere? Everyone is looking for God, even when they don’t know that they are! We’ve all been at that place where we ask where God is in the circumstances or situation, we’re in, we keep looking for God in places where we think or expect Him to be.
Think of how often we play the game of hiding and seek with God.
Are you playing hide and seek with God?
How often do we look for God but keep our hearts hidden?
How often do we go outside ourselves, and outside the scriptures to look for God, are you searching high and low for signs of Him, yet He’s waiting inside our hearts the whole time? The Lord is waiting for us to simply slow down to see and hear Him.
According to Jeremiah 29:13, we look for God with our hearts, not in places or things.
How often do we go out looking for God? We look for him in nature, in church, in other people. When all we need is to look beyond the natural and into the spiritual to find him.
God used three natural signs to exhibit His presence in communicating with Elijah on the mountain, but He wasn’t in any of these.
He’s waiting within us with a gentle whisper, waiting for us to acknowledge His constant presence because he’s already seeking us. We just need to surrender our search and allow the Lord to manifest Himself.
Elijah was with God and God was with and in him all the time, but then, he chose to leave where God was caring for him, to go lodge in a cave and when the Lord asked him why he was there, he justified his action by stating his jealousy for God in verse 9-10.
We justify our reason for hopping from place to place, church to church, one spiritual session to another looking for God, looking for someone else to tell or show us where God is, when are we going to stop looking for God in the places where He’s not?
Are you desperately seeking to find God in your life? Elijah was far from Israel where God has asked him to go but he did what all discouraged people do, he selectively and inaccurately justified his action, unfortunately magnifying the problem and minimizing God.
God wants to fellowship with us, He desires to be our first call when we are in need, and He expects us to approach Him with confidence according to Hebrew 4:16 to discuss our issues. God may even use whatever issues we have to attract our attention.
However, sometimes, we choose to run away and turn to other options. We forget that God is there with and for us, but we feel He doesn’t have time for us, so, we make excuses.
Stop! Be still! Look inside your heart.
Seek the Lord while he may be found says Isaiah 55:6. Accept God’s offer, don’t delay, open yourself to God and stop looking everywhere He’s not.
Shalom
