PURSUE HOSPITALITY

Romans 12:13 (AMP)
Contribute to the needs of God’s people [sharing in the necessities of the saints]; pursue the practise of hospitality.

The hospitality industry is a booming trade in every major city all over the world and we are in a time where people value their comfort and quality- well, as much as they can afford but hospitality is much more than these.
Although the word hospitality does not appear anywhere in the OT, there are plenty of heart-warming stories of hospitality told. Hospitality in the ancient kingdoms of the OT still goes on today in the Eastern culture largely due to the nomadic and desert existence.
In the Arab nations, a stranger can knock on your door, walk-in without an invitation and be treated like a king for 72 hours before the host can ask any questions- strange, but stranger still is the fact that it a cultural expectation of everyone; whilst they are in your home, you’re required to offer them food (whatever they like), a place to sleep, ( a guestroom, sofa, tent or mat on the floor), they are allowed anywhere except the family sleeping quarters.
We see this pattern repeated with Abraham in Genesis 18:2, Lot in Genesis 19:2, Abraham’s servant in Genesis 24:22, Jacob, and many others. I was invited to a pastor’s home for a “getting to know you” talk, I spent about 4hrs with her, unbelievably, she never offered me even the recommended cup of cold water in Matthew 10:42 much less any form of refreshment. Imagine how thirsty I was.
Pursuing hospitality is a necessary Christiane virtue. This exhortation might have originally been for the apostles, who were all itinerant ministers or Christians fleeing from persecution. This virtue is highly expected of Christians, especially ministers, who have the means of relieving brethren in distress, or of helping the poor wherever he may find them. Hospitality is the duty of all believers to humanity and one of the characteristics of a godly fast according to Isaiah 58:7.
Jehovah’s witnesses’ strong community spirit reinforces the instruction to pursue hospitality; when they arrive at a new destination, the first thing they do on arrival is to find a brethren that will host them until they move on- perfect strangers taking perfect strangers in and offering all the comfort of home because of their shared “religious beliefs.” David made Saul’s grandson a permanent guest at the royal table because of his friendship with Jonathan in 2 Samuel 9:7.
Jesus practised what He preached in Mark 6:30; He preached hospitality by feeding the multitude, and His disciples in John 21:9-14. The apostles received hospitality wherever they evangelised over the Roman empire seen in Acts 9:43, 10:5, 28:7.
Relieve poor brethren according to the power and resources which God has given you.
Hospitality is a biblical requirement for Christian leadership positions. 1 Timothy 3:2 says Christians must be hospitable. Willing to love strangers, be ready to receive them and share their goods with the needy as seen in Act 2:42.
Open your doors and hearts to strangers for the opportunity of hosting angles – do not forget or be unaware of your duty of love, compassion, and hospitality according to Hebrews 13:2. Everything God gives us is for the good and use of humanity, not to be squandered on selfish motivation. Pursue hospitality, you might host an Angel.
Shalom
