Proverbs 16:18 AMP
Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.
Pride! The most dangerous character flaw ever known to humanity that even God cannot stand it.
Galatians 6:3 says it’s self-deception when one thing they are something they aren’t.
The sin of pride violets God’s first rule of wisdom, the fear of the Lord which is the beginning of wisdom, while pride see oneself as the author of one’s achievements, abilities, successes, and wealth. Pride gives oneself honour and glory for the things that God has enabled and empowered us to gain.
The sin of pride brings destruction and humiliation.
Pride! The unreasonable and inordinate self-esteem and satisfaction with one’s achievements, the arrogant attribute of characterising everything by one’s standard of worth or perfection.
Proverbs 26:12 says a fool has more hope in any situation than a proud person because they are usually unteachable, unreasonable, and stubbornly unapproachable. This is deep, a fool here is the one with more possibilities than a proud person because they are full of conceit.
The conceit that Philippians 2:3 frowns upon, pride competes with everyone and believes they are the best and most important person in every situation.
Believers are not in competition with themselves, everyone is equal in God’s eyes, and not one person is better, greater, or more important than another.
Our purpose is to represent Christ wherever we are as best as possible without thinking ourselves indispensable.
God hates pride and resists the proud declares James 4:6, adding that God gives grace to the humble, a verse quoted by James and Peter in 1 Peter 5:5, first mentioned in Proverbs 3:34.
Pride is important to God because it is the arrogant independence from God and the superiority of one’s attitude. Pride is one of the four things that the Lord hates according to Proverbs 8:13.
Pride goes before a fall or destruction because it prevents us from submitting to God’s authority, will and purpose, making us pursue our agenda outside the will of God, leading to destruction as seen in proverbs 21:24.
The bible continues to reiterate that God will not share His glory with anyone, and we see that clearly with Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 5:20. Nebuchadnezzar did what so many do today; “look at what I can do, look how far I have come, how much I have accomplished, look at who I am”. Pride hardened Nebuchadnezzar’s heart which caused God to take the royal glory from him.
Pride, when unchecked, leads to a fall and eventual destruction. Pride brings disgrace to one and dishonours God. It creates a barrier in relationships and keeps people away. Pride makes one useless for kingdom agendas and mandates.
The proud one shall stumble and fall, with none to raise him up” according to Jeremiah 50:32, when the proud falls, no one will raise him up and that’s what happened to Edom in Obadiah 3-4. Pride made them mock Judea’s misfortune of invasion by their enemies, they arrogantly assumed because they lived within a rocky city, they were untouchable, they were wrong because of pride, and they fell never to rise again.
It’s a lie of the enemy to make us assume we’re self-sufficient, we aren’t because whatever we do outside of God’s will eventually fail. Remember Proverbs 14:12, the way may look right out of pride but leads only to destruction.
Shalom
