John 15:1-10 (AMP)
1 I AM the True Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser.
2 Any branch in Me that does not bear fruit [that stops bearing] He cuts away (trims off, takes away); and He cleanses and repeatedly prunes every branch that continues to bear fruit, to make it bear more and richer and more excellent fruit.
3 You are cleansed and pruned already, because of the word which I have given you [the teachings I have discussed with you].
4 Dwell in Me, and I will dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit of itself without abiding in (being vitally united to) the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me.
5 I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.
6 If a person does not dwell in Me, he is thrown out like a [broken-off] branch, and withers; such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If you live in Me [abide vitally united to Me] and My words remain in you and continue to live in your hearts, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you.
8 When you bear (produce) much fruit, My Father is honored and glorified, and you show and prove yourselves to be true followers of Mine.
9 I have loved you, [just] as the Father has loved Me; abide in My love [continue in His love with Me].
10 If you keep My commandments [if you continue to obey My instructions], you will abide in My love and live on in it, just as I have obeyed My Father’s commandments and live on in His love.
This is the final “I am” of Jesus, saying He is the vine. Why the vine? He could have said he is the trunk or bark, and we are the branches, instead, he says he is in us as we are in him. Intimately connected to and with him, the branch cannot thrive outside the vine just as genuine and true spiritual fruit cannot be grown outside of Christ the vine.
Christ is the only vine and true source of life, and every believer is a branch on this Vine. The root of the vine is unseen because it is connected to the life of Christ, and our life is hidden within Christ because the branch has no life within itself but receives sustenance by remaining attached to the vine.
Vines produce grapes, and as Christians connected to and stayed plugged into the vine, we must produce Christ-like fruits and life.
By their fruit you’ll know them; those without are either fake followers of Christ or unproductive people according to verse 4 and these are cut down and cast into the fire.
When we remain plugged into the vine as branches, we enjoy the care, security and love that is demonstrated by our fruit-bearing.
A Christian disconnected from the Lord will be without the safety support, provision and protection of the Lord, making it impossible for you to be Christlike and glorify the Father, because believers, like the branches on the vine, are weak, and unable to stand on their own needs to be born up by the vine.
Branches need pruning for them to produce high-quality fruits, if you are fruitful, the Lord will prune you, mostly with challenges, trials, and pain to help us grow in faith as stated in James 1:3, the pruning makes us more fruitful in life for the good of people around us and the glory of the Father. The more fruit we produce, the more we abound in what the Bible calls good works, the more our Lord is glorified.
Although God has plans for us, He made us promises that can only be fulfilled through prayer, prayer is often how God accomplishes His divine purposes.
To be fruitful, we must remain plugged in Christ the vine, and in union with him by faith. It is our responsibility as Christ’s disciples, to constantly keep up our dependence on Christ, and commune with Him in prayer, fellowship, worship, and Bible studies, we are empowered to do this in Philippians 4:13.
When we become disconnected from the vine, we discover that any interruption in the exercise of our faith, causes holy affection to decline, old corruptive habits are revived, and our spiritual comforts and peace decline.
Our spiritual walk is a two-way relationship, we must remain plugged into the vine to receive the nutrients, and moisture that aids growth: with the most visible expression of these seen in the complete joy Christ offers.
Let us seek to live simply on the fullness of Christ, and to be fruitful by abiding in his love – Keep your place in his affection if you want to grow and remain plugged into the Vine.
Shalom
