Matthew 24:45-47 ERV
“Who is the wise and trusted servant? The master trusts one servant to give the other servants their food at the right time. Who is the one the master trusts to do that work? [46] When the master comes and finds that servant doing the work he gave him, it will be a day of blessing for that servant. [47] I can tell you without a doubt, the master will choose that servant to take care of everything he owns.
Occupy means the act of taking possession of a property, keeping and hold onto that thing and making use of it.
The opening verse asks, “who then is a faithful servant?” that will be the one that takes possession and uses the property left in their care with accountability, integrity and wisdom.
We should all live in expectation of the coming back of Christ, as The Master, who, on departing for a season, left the management of His affairs to us, His servant; individually and cooperatively entrusted, Luke 19:13 and we are expected to give an exact account of what we did while He was away on His return. Verse 44.
We have all been appointed as labourers in God’s vineyard and we must all do our duties diligently to execute the kingdom agenda. Acts 1:8.
We must be scrupulously faithful and exact in fulfilling the commands of The Master to bear the kind of fruits expected of us. John 15:8.
Occupy until I come is obviously a very important statement of the purposes of the body of Christ and every believer on earth while Christ is gone to Heaven, for He reiterates the theme of the parable of the pounds in Luke 19 in numerous other parables in His teachings.
Some may interpret occupy till I come as doing their own thing, living life to the maximum (after all, you only live once) with the idea that the work of the kingdom is for the select few. Alas! It is for all of humanity- irrespective of your faith, you will give an account of how you occupied.
There is a necessity for being constantly prepared to appear before God because we don’t know when the kingdom will appear. Five virgins occupied diligently and were prepared for the appearance of the Master, on the other hand, five were slack in their duties, ignorant of the time and were caught unawares, unprepared without fruits. Matthew 25:1-13.
It is absolutely not the perfect will of God for anybody in His kingdom to just hold on instead of “Occupy until I come,” but to “protect what we have been given” until Jesus comes. In fact, Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 4:1 refers to us not fainting in our works—We will meet with many tribulations but are supported in and through all by the grace of the God: God has graciously entrusted us with our part in His ministry, we must not deal wickedly with the gifts and calling of the Lord but wisely use it to expand the kingdom of heaven.
All believers are stewards, and the responsibility of a steward is to protect that which has been committed unto him.
According to 1 Corinthians 4:2, a steward is required to be faithful in enlarging the holdings of his Master. He is not only a protector but also an investor. The word occupy has two meanings. In a passive sense, occupy does mean to protect that for which we have been made responsible. The primary meaning of occupy is to invest. One of the great challenges to the believer is to be both a protector and investor simultaneously.
Occupy yourself with the right things, with kingdom business until the Master return and be sure that He holds the reward for those found faithful.
Shalom
