NOT YOUR BATTLE!

2 Samuel 16:5-14 ESV
5 When King David came to Bahurim, there came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera, and as he came he cursed continually.
6 And he threw stones at David and at all the servants of King David, and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.
7 And Shimei said as he cursed, “Get out, get out, you man of blood, you worthless man!
8 The LORD has avenged on you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned, and the LORD has given the kingdom into the hand of your son Absalom. See, your evil is on you, for you are a man of blood.”
9 Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and take off his head.”
10 But the king said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the LORD has said to him, ‘Curse David,’ who then shall say, ‘Why have you done so?’”
11 And David said to Abishai and to all his servants, “Behold, my own son seeks my life; how much more now may this Benjaminite! Leave him alone, and let him curse, for the LORD has told him to.
12 It may be that the LORD will look on the wrong done to me, and that the LORD will repay me with good for his cursing today.”
13 So David and his men went on the road, while Shimei went along on the hillside opposite him and cursed as he went and threw stones at him and flung dust.
14 And the king, and all the people who were with him, arrived weary at the Jordan. And there he refreshed himself.

The battle belongs to the Lord according to 2 Chronicles 20:15, encouraging us to leave the battles, to the Lord who will fight for us, this is God saying “I’ve got this, I’ve got your back, I’ll fight the enemy on your behalf and defend you in battle.
There are battles we should fight, there are those we shouldn’t even concern ourselves with as the Lord told Moses in Exodus 14:14, “I will fight for you” why would you go to a battle that someone else, God especially want to fight for you?
Some people are trigger or sword happy like Abishai, ready to go to battle on a whim. As a man of war, he was always ready for battle and in this instance, ready to act in defence of his king.
How many Abishai are roaming around looking to go to battle for any cause? Even when it had nothing to do with them.
Child of God! That battle is not yours! The Lord is a man of war, which is His name according to Exodus 15:3 and He takes the responsibility of defending us seriously.
We have both physical and spiritual enemies and Ephesians 6:12 wants us to understand that our battles are not against flesh and blood. Yes, the people are real, and the battles and challenges are real, but they are not the cause or root of the problems.
The world itself is waring against you if you identify with Christ, conflicts wreck everyone, everywhere, injuring and killing many.
The battle between evil and good is as old as time and never-ending and the only successful way to win that battle is to fight from the place of victory in Christ, secure in the amour of God.
Who and what is attacking you? Like Shemie, who is throwing stones at you for whatever they assume is your crime? Shimei didn’t even have his facts right, his accusations were wrong but that didn’t bother David as he saw it as a spiritual matter.
David as a man of war knew how to pick his battles and he wasn’t going to waste his military skill on an opportunistic local champion like Shimei.
It’s not your battle! David could have allowed Abishai to deal with Shimei but didn’t. Instead, his response sounded almost like “this is not your battle, move on Abishai, how is this your business? We honestly can’t fault Abishai’s loyalty, After all, he’s been fighting with and for David for a long time, so why shouldn’t he do what he’s trained to do?
Some of us are either looking for battles to fight just because we can fight, or we just don’t like oppression.
I say to you, it’s not your fight, not your battle, move on!
When the enemy comes against you, the Lord says in Deuteronomy 20:4 He is your God he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.’
Stop fighting! You can’t win spiritual battles with natural strength and weapons!
God calls us His battle-axe in Jeremiah 51:20 but He alone knows the strategy to victory and how to defeat the enemy. There are battles you walk away from and live to fight another day as David did with Shimei.
Not your battle! Walk away!
Shalom
