Titus 3:5 ESV
he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
There’s a timeless catholic hymn of Monix that I love so much and truly believe encompasses God as the Merciful God.
God of mercy and compassion
Look with pity upon me
Father, let me call thee Father
Tis thy child returns to thee.
Jesus Lord, I ask for mercy
Let me not implore in vain
All my sins I now detest them
Never will I sin again.
God is merciful. We come to God, not by our works of righteousness—we who are foolish, disobedient, and deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, could not possibly have any works of righteousness with which to plead or case with a Holy and righteous judge; therefore, it stands that we are all saved by the act of the Merciful God.
God’s mercy towards us is undeserved kindness. God saved us by sending his Son to die on the cross. Was it because we are so deserving, wonderful, or good? Certainly not. We are undeserving sinners, but in his mercy, God washes away our sins daily, Lamentations 3:22, so that we are not destroyed.
It’s only for His mercy that we are able to call Him Father because He took pity on us and won’t allow our petitions to be in vain.
Because God is merciful, we too need to be merciful to others. In Matthew 18 Jesus told a parable about a man who owed a king a lot of money. The man asked the king for mercy, and the king kindly cancelled his debt and let him go. The man left and found someone who owed him a small amount of money. That man begged for mercy but received none and was thrown into prison. When the king heard about it, he said to the man whose debt he had forgiven, “Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?” Matthew 18:33. And the king threw that man into prison, this man and his debtor whom he threw in prison, were both in prison because one refused to show mercy.
God has shown us much mercy, in fact, it is because of His mercies we’ve not been consumed, so we should show mercy to those who have wronged us. They may not deserve it, but then again, neither do we.
The Merciful God’s steadfast love signifies an irrevocable commitment to his promise to love and protect His children from corruption and destruction.
For His mercy’s sake, God saved us purely by His mercy, which He poured out so richly through Jesus Christ.
The God of mercy showed us kindness in washing us individually and granting us salvation prompted by His merciful nature.
We must be thankful to the Lord, for His continuous undeserved mercies towards us. None of us could have been saved otherwise and we should be conscious to always ask the Lord’s help to extend mercy as we have freely received to others around us, even when we don’t think they deserve it.
We can cry to God for mercy, asking Him to withhold the judgment we deserve and instead grant us the forgiveness we in no way have earned because His mercy triumph over judgment. James 2:13. Mercy prevails always.
Shalom
