HUMILITY!

Philippians 2:3-4 AMP
Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit [through factional motives, or strife], but with [an attitude of] humility [being neither arrogant nor self-righteous], regard others as more important than yourselves.
[4] Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.

Do you know how many times you got upset because things and people don’t operate the way your “right” expects them to do?
Pride gets in the way of other people’s right for your right to be honoured.
Humility is the absence of false pride, a modest or unassuming view of one’s importance. People generally detest a proud person, but the bible talks a lot about pride being a sin and not a virtue. In addition, proverbs 3:34 tells us that God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble, where God is concerned, humility as meekness, lowliness, and absence of self is what He requires from those who love Him and are ready to fellowship with Him.
Pride and arrogance would not allow so many of us to do a lot of things because we consider them beneath us, not worth our time, and either they are too mundane, therefore no accolade in them.
But our text says to not do anything out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.
Are we willing to do whatever, go wherever God tells us? Some arrogantly assume they know what the Lord wants from them, certainly not for them to stoop low to menial activities they think wouldn’t glorify God because of course it won’t glorify them.
Humility is doing whatever the Lord requires of us, humbly surrendering to His Lordship, trusting that He knows what’s best for us and will work it out in His way and time.
1 Peter 5:5 instructs us to clothe ourselves with humility towards others, not to feel too arrogant and proud to submit to those leading us, whether younger or older than us.
But we do that don’t we?
We see young people treat older people with disdain because they either have more money, are in a higher position of authority, have more clout or are more popular. Nobody should think they are more important than others according to Romans 12:3, this means that we shouldn’t boast of our accomplishments and abilities in contrast to those around us.
God resists the proud declares James 4:6-10, this is a strong word-RESIST-if God resists one, everything good will elude you because God will stand in opposition to you. Verse 10 then says God will by His hand heighten your rank if you walk in humility.
If we look at it this way, it means humility is the key to progress. When we surrender and submit our right and will to the Lord, He honours us by setting us in places we otherwise can’t be on our accord by giving us the grace to take giant strides and to make true progress in our daily lives. Submitting willingly to the Lord and those around us in humility means placing oneself under the authority of God and others. It doesn’t make us undeserving or foot mats but people humbling in obedience to God’s will and rule in our lives.
Humility produces the fear of the Lord that rewards one with riches, honour and life according to Proverbs 22:4. Through this, the genuinely humble do not play at being God or stand superior over others, they neither demand honour nor hold on to their right to be accorded respect because of who they are.
The humble are blessed for they will inherit the earth says Matthew 5:5.
Shalom
