Zechariah 4:10 (ESV)
For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. “These seven are the eyes of the LORD, which range through the whole earth.”
Who in their right and reasonable mind forgets the days of humble beginnings? Everything in life starts from somewhere and mostly from small things. The giant Oaktree starts from a seed, and a forest starts from a tree.
Prophet Zechariah asked the question of the Jews who just returned from captivity and were trying to rebuild the temple, a task that seemed impossible to them.
The Lord spoke to them prophetically and asked the question “Who has despised the day of small things?” The question is as valid to us today.
Have you discarded the testimony of your humble beginning?
People tend to change their story to suit their status and position and often, it is those days of humble beginning that usually captures the heart of the hearers, yet that is the area most people don’t want to talk about.
We must be thankful for everything especially for the little things that God used to grow the big things. God wants us to be grateful for all things, both small and big things.
God starts small, everything in God’s system is a process and every process starts from a humble beginning.
God used a small stick in the hands of Moses to baffle Pharaoh on his throne.
The Church started with about 120 disciples in the upper room and has spread across the globe. Small doesn’t mean useless! It’s a humble beginning!
We mustn’t take for granted the hard work that goes into setting up and starting up anything of worth. The huge business, big church, the great wealth we all see and admire, all started from an idea.
How about a king being born in a manger amid the stench and filth of animals? Every little thing adds up to a big thing.
Do not wait to appreciate things only after they succeed. Recognize and appreciate the hand of God in the little things that come your way. God is interested in both the big and the small things, everything is important to the Lord.
Do you know how much that idea in your mind is worth? Are you despising your congregation because there are only two or three people in attendance? God is asking you this question today: What do you have in your hands? Do not despise it, for it might be all God will use to change your world. Nurture the small things that are in your hands. A job, a relationship, a project? Or it’s the small beginning of a glimmer of hope in trials and tribulation. Whatever it is remember the Lord, and His mighty works and His faithfulness to you in your circumstances. Then ask yourself AGAIN “Who has despised the day of small things?”
The Lord Jesus never despises that day! He delights in even the slightest glimmer of desire for His mercy and grace. He has flung wide open the door of forgiveness saying, in Matthew 11:28 “Come and rest, if you are weary and heavy-laden.
Do you despise the days of small beginnings? Those little beginnings always grow into a big thing. Your humble beginning is part of your testimony and the evidence of God’s grace and favour on you. Do not trample on it, appreciate it!
Shalom
