FLEECING THE LORD

Judges 6:36-40 (CSBBible)
36 Then Gideon said to God, “If you will deliver Israel by me, as you said,
37 I will put a wool fleece here on the threshing floor. If dew is only on the fleece, and all the ground is dry, I will know that you will deliver Israel by me, as you said.”
38 And that is what happened. When he got up early in the morning, he squeezed the fleece and wrung dew out of it, filling a bowl with water.
39 Gideon then said to God, “Don’t be angry with me; let me speak one more time. Please allow me to make one more test with the fleece. Let it remain dry, and the dew be all over the ground.”
40 That night God did as Gideon requested: only the fleece was dry, and dew was all over the ground.

Asking God for a sign is not presented in a positive light in the scripture. Wrongly asking for signs was typical for the scribes, Pharisees, and Sadducees in the New Testament: Matthew 12:38-40.
Gideon was very bold to question the Lord by asking for a sign for God to prove His plan.
How often do we hear it? “I put out a fleece for the Lord to find out His will.” This action is based on the text. The Lord has told Gideon that He will deliver the Israelites from the Midianite raiders and oppressors of 7 years. When an angel calls him “mighty warrior” Vs12, we can almost see Gideon looking over his shoulders, wondering who he was talking to. But when the angel tells him that God will use him to deliver the people, Gideon argues, vs.15 and then asks for a sign, vs.17. The angel gives him a sign by consuming his sacrifice with miraculous fire vs.21.
Do you need a sign from the Lord to convince you that He is faithful to perform His word? He will do it! Jeremiah 1:12, He has given His word, it is unfaithfulness on our part to require the Lord to prove to us that He is legit.
Gideon’s requests for a sign through the fleece should be viewed as weak faith; even Gideon recognized this when he said “do not be angry with me” vs. 39 since God had already specifically promised His presence and victory in vs. 12, 14, 16.
The request for a fleece was a request for a miraculous sign. It was not simply a request for events to go a certain way. First, Gideon did not put the fleece out to determine God’s will. He already knew God’s will. He had been told by the angel, and he even subtly acknowledged it with the phrase “as you have promised.” Gideon knew what God wanted him to do, yet he “fleeced the Lord” anyway.
The fleece was a sign of unbelief. Gideon had already received a miraculous sign from God to prove that He was going to give Gideon victory and deliver Israel. Yet, perhaps because of the response of his own townsmen, Gideon doubted. He had to have another sign. And then yet another. In other words, Gideon knew God’s will but didn’t believe it. “Fleecing the Lord” was not a method of determining God’s will, it was an act of faithlessness because Gideon didn’t trust that God would do what He had already promised.
When we ask God to give us a sign, what we are really wanting to know is:
Does God see me?
Does He hear me?
Does He know what is happening to me?
Does He care about my situation?
Does He love me?
He knows everything, nothing is hidden from Him according to Hebrews 4:13, rather than looking for and asking for a sign, why not be like Moses and ask to see God’s face and glory in your situation.
You don’t determine God’s will by fleecing Him, you do so by seeking Him and He promises to be found when you look, Jeremiah 13:19.
Seek the Lord, not fleece Him, God can’t be mocked or deceived.
Shalom
