Psalm 37:4 (AMP)
4 Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart.
Everyone is created with the capacity to desire something; physical, mental, emotional, material, and spiritual desires. Desire is the natural longing that is excited by the enjoyment or the thought of anything good and its continuance or possession, it is the eager wish to obtain or enjoy something. Desires could be healthy or unhealthy, godly, or ungodly, casual, or intense. You can desire something simple, like a good cup of coffee or you can develop a burning passion for something that may eventually consume you like chemical substances.
God created desires within us as a means of expressing ourselves. Desire is good and healthy if directed towards the proper object of desire, that which is good and right and God-honouring. Isaiah 26:8.
Our greatest desire should be to seek after God, according to Jeremiah 29:13 and Matthew 6:33.
Walking with God is the best way to cultivate godly desires and walking away from God allows the weeds of ungodliness to grow unchecked, Deuteronomy 29:18. Man’s heart is a fertile ground for all sorts of desires when you spend days in God’s presence, the desires that grow in you will be things of beauty, godliness, and blessings.
Samson’s selfish desire is obvious in his “get her for me,” mentality. He wanted what he wanted, disregarding his parents’ warnings and God’s law against marrying women of other cultures. Like Samson, the consuming focus of our lives may determine our directions. Unfortunately, desires that turn out not too good for us are usually ones that we most desire seen in Judges 14:3.
1 kings 3:5 shows us that God knows and recognises the deep desires within us all when we aren’t aware of them, God knew there was an unspoken desire in Solomon’s heart. All too familiar, these desires are not always aligned with God’s desires for us as they tend to be outside what the Lord wants for us. Later, like Solomon, our desires turn ugly and may result in our downfall, 1 king 1:1-13.
God has a desire and out of that desire for a relationship, He created the world and mankind.
Out of God’s desire for our enjoyment, He created a magnificent variety in people (race, colour tribe) and nature.
Out of God’s desire to care for us, He made food and resources for shelter, warmth, and medicine.
From God’s desire to teach us about love, He created the intimate bond of marriage and set an example to follow.
From God’s desire for our love and fellowship, He developed a plan of salvation through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Desire is one of God’s most wonderful gift as it puts power behind our desires for God.
To those whose heart God has inspired for service to Him, remember that the desire is given to accomplish many tasks, therefore anything we do for the Lord must have the right motive and the energy of sincere desire behind it.
God will supply the desire to do what is important as you allow Him into every area of your life as your main desire. Be persistent in your godly desire and the substance of that desire fired constantly in God’s presence and He will grant you the desires of your heart. Palm 37:4.
Shalom
