Matthew 18:20 (AMP)
For wherever two or three are gathered (drawn together as My followers) in (into) My name, there I AM in the midst of them.
We are not created to live alone, in isolation or in loneliness, we need fellowship with others. We want a relationship with God, but how many of us know how to fellowship with others and the Holy Spirit? The primary reason for fellowship is to join with others.
There are all kinds of fellowships but, the most important and dynamic of all is Christian fellowship because at the centre of it the Lord uniting all race, tribe, and creed for a heavenly mandate.
When believers get together starting with two or more, God is among them, this is the foundation of our Christian gathering according to Matthew 18:20.
Fellowship, throughout the scriptures emphasizes the worth of Christian community bounded together by faith and trust in Christ as seen in Acts 2:42. One of the things the early church devoted herself to was fellowship, an integral part of Christian gatherings. This means that fellowship is a priority and one of the objectives for gathering, is to manifest Proverbs 27:17. This is something we ought to emulate today, instead, we view fellowship as what we do in community halls, churches, or conference halls. Our modern-day fellowship is the place where we come occasionally to have casual conversations, enjoy coffee and biscuits, without making any meaningful spiritual impact on ourselves. True fellowship involves getting together for spiritual purposes: for sharing needs, for prayer intercession, for sharing the Word to encourage, comfort, and edify one another according to Hebrew 10:24-25, Acts 2:45-47.
Christian fellowship is needed to help communion, spiritual and numerical growth, sadly, so many believers today do not recognize the importance of fellowship or local church involvement. All aspects of our spiritual lives depend on being together with other believers to encourage, teach, serve, and share life together.
Christian fellowship is critical! Being in the company of people who think like you do is very, according to 2 Corinthians 6:14, it is important to your growth and survival as a Christian to be among fellow believers and not be in fellowship with unbelievers, so that we can learn from and teach each other. If you live in a church-wealthy community, you are likely to find that companionship. Most churches offer small group experience that you can become a part of, like house fellowship, life group or cell group: these are all geared to help grow your local church, boost friendship and companionship and help you grow spiritually.
Through the Holy Ghost, we have fellowship with the Father and with one another according to 1 John 1:3, the Holy Spirit is essential our gathering, fellowship with Christ in grace, and with the Father in love, otherwise, our gathering will just be another social gathering for eating, drinking and merriment as states in Luke 12:19.
When the Lord prayed that all His disciples might be “one,” in John 17:20-21, a warm fellowship was implied. that should prevail among them.
Since fellowship involves getting together with others, then we must understand that fellowship is based on something we have in common with other people. But the bible in 1 John 1:6-7, restrains believers from fellowshipping with those who walk in spiritual darkness but to fellowship with those who walk in the light.
