Song of Songs 2:15 (AMP)
[My heart was touched and I fervently sang to him my desire] Take for us the foxes, the little foxes that spoil the vineyards [of our love], for our vineyards are in blossom.
It’s always the little things that make a difference in life, they are the things easily and quickly noticed or ignored. Solomon considered foxes to be destructive animals that could destroy valuable vineyards. Foxes love the vine and do the most damage when the clusters are young and tender. These are likely the words of the bridegroom to his companions, to “take care of the vineyard, set the traps for the foxes, which are spoiling the vines,
It is the little foxes that often destroy corporations, a home, a life, and ministry, bad attitude, poor behaviour, lack of encouragement, poor time management, impatience, and gossip. We must listen for the sound of little foxes and watch for their footprints and catch them before they do any damage.
The little foxes that spoil the vines is a reference to small plunderers that were a common pestilence for vineyard keepers, they represent the problems and differences found in every relationship and they would usually ruin the vines at the crucial time of the grapes budding.
We are or may know someone who would say: “the only problem with such and such is their behaviour, attitude, timekeeping or gossiping,” if only they will change! These are the little foxes already at work in this person’s life.
The sins of the flesh according to 2 Corinthians 7:1 is adultery, murder, blasphemy, drunkenness etc. The little foxes refer to sin that creeps in almost unnoticed and spoils the vines and take away the fruit. There are three kinds: the wrong things we think about, the wrong things we say and the wrong things we do. These may be described as heart sin, lip sin and behavioural sin.
The way to deal with “the little foxes” is to catch and kill them. they must be rounded up and put to death, we must crucify the flesh to kill the foxes with the act of uniting ourselves to Christ according to Galatians 5:24.
The flesh must be crucified but if not, the little foxes will grow into big foxes! judges 15:4-5 illustrates the way to kill the little foxes and Romans 13:14 tells us how to avoid them taking hold and doing damage to us.
We can’t on our strength and wisdom get rid of these little foxes but if we rely on the Holy Ghost, we discover how best to kill them.
Galatians 5:16 tells us that if the Spirit of God dwell and rule in our hearts, the whole carnal mind will be destroyed, including the little foxes.
When we yield to the Holy Spirit, trust Him, and rely on Him to give us victory, there will be an appearance of an abundance of godly fruits in us, the fruit of the Spirit. We must always build fences around ourselves to keep out the foxes, Sin which brings death to the soul. Paul says in Romans 6:23 that the wage of sin is death.
And James 2:10 says whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles on one is guilty of breaking all of it. Sin is sin and one deliberate act can dissolve the sacred connection between man and God.
If God should be obeyed in any one instance, he should be obeyed in all. Catch the little foxes before they do damage.
Shalom
