Proverbs 23:18 (AMP)
For surely there is a latter end [a future and a reward], and your hope and expectation shall not be cut off.
Expectations are beliefs or mental pictures of the future, the feeling that something is about to happen and the anticipation of the fulfilment of this expectation. Expectations can be high or low, reasonable, or unreasonable, good, or bad.
Our expectations are not always correct because of the flaws in our logic and the bias of hope and desire. Sometimes, we get our hopes up based on a false premise or misreading evidence. Often, we form expectations automatically, without conscious effort and if these expectations are not met, disappointment sets in.
Our text says the expectations of the righteous shall not be cut off. What gives such an assurance to the expectations of the righteous is simply the fact that the righteous believes in the goodness and faithfulness of God, which does not fail, because God does not take back His word according to Isaiah 31:2.
Another word for expectation is hope and the bible says in Romans 5:5 that such hope does not disappoint.
Hebrews 11:1 says things hoped for are the substance of our faith.
One of the dynamic products of our faith in God is positive expectation. Faith always incubates positive expectations. Hope is defined as the positive expectation of something good happening to you.
We have expectations from our parents, spouse, children, friends, and many others and when those expectations are not met, we become disappointed, disillusioned, angry, and sometimes vindictive, because human expectations are not always reasonable.
We all have expectations for our lives, careers/businesses, families, and health, some of these may be fulfilled at our timing or we may need to wait on God’s timing. Either way, we still need to be expectant to hopefully receive that which we are waiting for. God promises that expectations place on Him will not be cut off, die, disappointed or ignored. Whatever our expectations are in Christ, they can and will be fulfilled even beyond our expectations, says Ephesians 3:20.
People say, “don’t get your hope up/high,” “don’t expect too much,” these are so you don’t feel let down when things don’t materialise as you expected, but the reverse is the case with God, according to 1 John 5:14, we have confidence that godly and scriptural expectations are met according to His will.
The Bible tells us several things to expect:
Such as redemption in Romans 8:19
The expectation of judgment in Hebrews 10:27.
Delayed and realised expectations in Proverbs 13:12a.
Unrealized expectations in Proverbs 11:7.
Jesus told us to expect His return, so, the greatest expectation is heaven, but if you do not expect anything from God here on earth, how do you hope to receive eternal expectations as seen in Luke 12:40.
The unexpectedness of Christ’s return will only meet the need of the expectant. Are you?
Psalm 62:5 says that it is God whom we can safely trust, but to get His help, commit yourself into His hands, be subject to him, and be silent before him and in everything, we should look to God and trust Him Proverbs 3:5–6. His promises are sound, absolute and the expectation that He will fulfil His Word is called faith and faith yields great expectations. Expect great things from God, He will never cut you off.
Shalom
