Numbers 17
Before we ever get to the book of Ezekiel 37, we need to remind ourselves that God has forever been in the business of miracles.
God’s glory is the presence of the Lord, the combined presence and glory of God is what creates the atmosphere for miracles, and as we know Luke 1:37 says nothing is impossible with God, nothing, absolutely nothing.
The budding rod happened because Korah and his followers questioned the authority of Aaron and his claim to the priesthood. The Lord had hand-picked the tribe of Levi as the priest forever, the office that can only ever be occupied by a Levite.
The “staff” is identified as a walking stick and a symbol of royal authority for an Israeli and a prophet. Also referred to as the rod or staff of a shepherd in Exodus 4:2 and psalm 23:4.
A rod is deadwood and only useful for standing and walking but since Christ is the vine according to John 15:5, anything and anyone connected to and abides in Him, though dead, can still live.
This is a rod, not a branch. A branch that had been cut off from a tree for so long, the back stripped to become a rod, in other words, a stick, dead limb.
The dispute was put before the Lord, and Moses was instructed to take every man involved in the dispute’s rod, which the chief of each tribe bore, the sign of their office or royalty.
Twelve rods were placed in the tent of meeting, in the presence of the Lord with the names of the owners written on them including Aaron’s who was the head of the tribe of Levi.
Beyond all possibility, Aaron’s rod not only sprouted but blossomed because it slept in God’s presence, Almonds grew overnight on the rod, revealing the origin of the rod.
Aaron’s rod is cited twice as exhibiting miraculous power on its own, when not physically in the grasp of Aaron’s hand. In Exodus 7, God sent Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh, instructing Aaron to “cast down his rod” which become a serpent, swallowing the sorcerers’ snake.
The budding and blooming of Aaron’s rod were to further confirm that he was a Levite and God’s elected high priest.
There is no dead place in God. Whatever and whoever encounters the glorious presence of the Lord will be revived, bud and blossom just like Aaron’s rod.
Hebrews 9:4 tells us that Aaron’s rod remained in the Ark of the Covenant as a testimony of God’s choice of Aaron and Moses to lead His people.
It took God “overnight” to grow a tree inside the “tent of testimony.” Whatever you are facing can still be done overnight for our testimony to be ready and heard by morning.
Life happens in stages, God allowed us to see it in the simplest of ways here: observe that the three stages of life occurred simultaneously, bud, blossom, and fruit.
The budding rod is a token for the rebels in Moses’ day and the present-day unbelievers and all people seeking the Miraculous God, that indeed He is in command of all things living and dead: not even death can stop the Father from acting.
In God’s presence, we will flourish and blossom like Aaron’s rod, in Your presence, that’s where I want to be.
Shalom
