Judges 4:11-22 (AMP)
11 Now Heber the Kenite, of the descendants of Hobab, the father-in-law of Moses, had separated from the Kenites and encamped as far away as the oak in Zaanannim, which is near Kedesh.
12 When it was told Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor,
13 Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even 900 chariots of iron, and all the men who were with him from Harosheth-hagoiim to the river Kishon.
14 And Deborah said to Barak, Up! For this is the day when the Lord has given Sisera into your hand. Is not the Lord gone out before you? So, Barak went down from Mount Tabor with 10,000 men following him.
15 And the Lord confused and terrified Sisera and all his chariot drivers and all his army before Barak with the sword. And Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled on foot.
16 But Barak pursued after the chariots and the army to Harosheth-hagoiim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the sword; not a man was left.
17 But Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.
18 And Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me; have no fear. So he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.
19 And he said to her, Give me, I pray you, a little water to drink for I am thirsty. And she opened a skin of milk and gave him a drink and covered him.
20 And he said to her, Stand at the door of the tent, and if any man comes and asks you, Is there any man here? Tell him, No.
21 But Jael, Heber’s wife, took a tent pin and a hammer in her hand and went softly to him and drove the pin through his temple and into the ground; for he was in a deep sleep from weariness. So he died.
22 And behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him and said to him, Come, and I will show you the man you seek. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the tent pin was in his temples.
To be positioned for God’s purpose is to be cunningly positioned to do something in a cleverly planned way when an opportunity presents itself. We all desire to be properly positioned to make more impact.
Jael- is what the Arabs call a Bedouin, was the wife of Heber-a semi-nomadic tribe of the Kenites who were related to the Midianites. Her husband’s name, Heber means “ally,” who left his people and pitched his tent in the North near Hazor where he became loyal to Jabin, the enemy of Israel.
Loyalty, divided loyalty, friendship, and sides: how many times has a relationship been split over these? One minute, you’ve got someone on your side and the next, they’ve switched sides on you.
Jael appears in the book of Judges as a hero who killed Sisera, the leader of King Jabin’s Canaanite army. Jabin was trying to conquer Israel, under the leadership of Deborah, a prophetess and the only female judge of Israel.
As Heber’s wife, whose side do you think she should have been, she takes Israel’s side and in effect God’s side. Sisera expected his “ally” friend, Heber’s wife to be loyal to her husband and his ally. Vs 9,21,23,24.
As the Israelites were winning the battle, as prophesied by Deborah, Sisera left his army at the Kishon River and fled on foot, he made his escape to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber expecting sanctuary, Vs 16–17. Heber’s wife, Jael, welcomed Sisera into her tent, covered him with a blanket, she was kind and hospitable, but with an ulterior motive. After Sisera had eaten well and was asleep, Jael took a tent peg and a mallet and sneaked up on Sisera. She placed the tent peg’s point on his temple and hit the peg with the mallet, driving it through his temple with such force that it stuck in the ground on the other side of his head and Sisera died Vs 21.
Deborah’s prophecy was fulfilled: the honour of killing the captain of Jabin’s army went to a Jael, a woman. As Barak pursued Sisera, he came to Heber’s settlement. Jael met him and brought him to show him what she had done—Sisera’s body was lying with a tent peg in his temple. Barak and Deborah later sang a song of the battle, in which they honoured Jael by name.
The Lord will use anyone who is positioned for His purpose, “whom shall I send to prophesy and who will go for us”? In a way, Jael responded to this question, have you answered it? Are you willing and ready to be used by the Lord? Are you positioned for the purpose to be effective in God’s vineyard?
Jael was alert, recognizing an opportunity to be used by God, that’s a position all Christians should take, when we are vigilant, we know when the “cunning enemy” begins to creep into Eden, when and how to take a stand against him.
The enemy is always messing with our destinies, we mustn’t hesitate to deal him a deadly blow with the hammer of God. Be cunningly positioned in the word of God and led by the Holy Spirit to take down the enemy.
Shalom
