Psalm 91:1-16 (Darby)
1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I say of Jehovah, My refuge and my fortress; my God, I will confide in him.
3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, [and] from the destructive pestilence.
4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou find refuge: his truth is a shield and buckler.
5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night, for the arrow that flieth by day,
6 For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; [but] it shall not come nigh thee.
8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold, and see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because thou hast made Jehovah, my refuge, the Most High, thy dwelling-place,
10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent.
11 For he shall give his angels charge concerning thee, to keep thee in all thy ways:
12 They shall bear thee up in [their] hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and the adder; the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under foot.
14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him.
16 With length of days will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
Secret place, dwelling place, or hidden place, and whatever else you want to call it is a picture of security, safety, protection and covering. To dwell in the secret place of the Most High is to live in the divine presence of the Lord, sheltering from all the arrows and darts that life throws at you. This is one of the most comforting chapters of the bible. The Lord is simultaneously your secret place and hiding place, according to Psalm 32:7, nothing can attack, harm, or scare you when you “hide in your secret place.”
This is a two-fold security pass, first, you hide in God’s presence which happens to be a secret place only you and the Lord knows of, that is very comforting, isn’t it? In this place, you experience God’s power of protection and comfort from the storm, while wrapped in His overflowing and excessive love.
In the secret place of the Most High, Spoken probably about the Holy of holies in the temple of God. He who enters legitimately there shall be covered with the cloud of God’s glory—the protection of the all-sufficient God. This was the privilege of the high priest only, under the law: but under the new covenant all believers in Christ have boldness to enter the holiest by the blood of Jesus, and those who enter are safe from every evil.
The secret place, the hiding place, or the dwelling place, shelter and divine presence of God is not an occasionally, once a while, often or sometimes affair. It is always a way of life. You never leave the secret place. It is a place that you consciously, consistently, and continuously remain in. For when the day of adversity comes, you will be glad you are hidden in the Lord, Psalm 27:5: because the secret place is where you find peace, provision, direction, vision, strength, confidence, perspective and overcome all. It describes the confidence that believers may have through all types of dangers and challenges.
When you are in the secret place, the storms don’t have power over you, attacks don’t defeat you, barriers don’t stop you, sickness doesn’t weaken you and lack don’t threaten you because the Lord is a secure defence (shelter, shadow, refuge, fortress) for those who take refuge in him.
In the secret place, God gives you an eternal view of your life that keeps you steady in a shaky world. Psalm 17:8, John 16:33. The mention of a plague recalls the plagues that fell on Egypt in Genesis 12:17 and what the world faces now with Covid-19. As it happened then, the faithful are always safe in a time of God’s judgment.
The secret place is the only place to run to and remain in to preserve life, destiny and eternity, psalm 71:3.
Battles are won in the secret place, secrets revealed, strategies and battle plans obtained, promotions for the next level and seasons received and secured. Matthew 11:12.
The secret place and the presence of God is a place of encounter, a place of transformation and change.
The world calls anyone who hides a coward but with God, hiding in Him is what makes you a giant slayer, find your secret place in the Lord and remain hidden in Him.
Shalom
