Hebrews 5:14 TLB
You will never be able to eat solid spiritual food and understand the deeper things of God’s Word until you become better Christians and learn right from wrong by practicing doing right.
The word discerns means to distinguish, to separate by diligent search, and to examine. Discernment is the ability to properly discriminate or make determinations.
According to Hebrews 4:12, the Word of God discerns the thoughts and intentions of one’s heart.
There are all kinds of smells, that also include spiritual things and discernment. We can smell evil just as well as we smell pleasant odours, we can say discernment is the odours part of wisdom.
What’s that smell? You may walk into a place and straight away you pick up an unusual or unpleasant smell that either most people present there or no one else smells. When you’re discerning, you demonstrate wisdom and insight that goes far above what you see and hear because according to 1 Corinthians 2:14, the natural man cannot access the things of the spirit without the Holy Spirit who gives discernment.
In certain situations, the Lord will allow us to discern by smell what is going on around us, smells that don’t align with the word and work of God especially when it’s clocked in righteousness.
The person with discernment will acknowledge the truth of God’s Word according to Proverbs 8:8-9 which says “All the words of my mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse. To the discerning all of them are right; they are faultless to those who know, so when one is exhibiting a contrary message, we are then able to tell that it’s not of God as 1 John 4:1 instructs. Test the spirit, smell it, check it. Test the spirits by smelling the essence. One can test the spiritual influences that guide people by observing their doctrine and conduct. God has also provided the gift of spiritual discernment for this purpose.
If we want to walk in righteousness, we must seek discernment, we must smell things in the spirit before they exhibit in the natural. Hosea 14:9 says “Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them; for the ways of the LORD are right, and the upright walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them.
Acts 16 is a good example of walking in discernment. Paul changed his plans as he discerned the needs around him. He expressed discernment in all things, in choosing leaders, in choosing what to say in court, and where to go on his next mission trip and we will notice that at each stage, God worked through Paul’s discernment to glorify His name.
The new age, the millennial culture, the generation X will all tempt and test us and as Romans 12:2 say, we must not allow them to sway us but must test and smell everything about us to weed out the evil, negatives, unrighteous and wicked
There are places we wouldn’t naturally hang about because of the smell, why then do we hang about the den of iniquity, that stinks of all manner of evil without flinching?
Spiritual discernment gives us unusual intuition and perceptions of both the natural and spiritual world according to Proverbs 3:21-24.
True discernment starts with prayer and just as Solomon requested from the Lord, we too must learn to ask the Spirit of God for guidance and discernment.
Are you discerning? What’s that smell? Let the smell be an indicator for you.
Shalom
