Genesis 3:13 (KJV)
And the LORD God said unto the woman, what is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, the serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
It is human nature to make excuses and apportion blame for their actions. We use all kinds of gimmicks to avoid retribution such as blaming someone else.
The devil made me do it,” “it’s the devil’s fault, not mine,” we apportion blame to avoid the consequences of our actions. The sentence could have been funny if it was not a kingdom defeating strategy of the enemy.
It came from the scriptures, though not in these words, that was exactly what Eve meant in her response to the Lord’s question in verse 13- “what have you done?” Her response- the serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
People of all ages try to avoid consequences, unfortunately not realising that we are still playing into the enemy’s hand by not owning up to our mistakes and sins.
Jesus’ death defeated the devil on the cross and publicly shamed him according to Colossians 2:14-15, so now, the devil tries to defeat us through deception and not through any power, he has none as all belongs to God, he’s only shooting blank, powerless bullets.
The devil tempts us to sin as stated in Genesis 3; Luke 4; and 1 Peter 5:8 but “the devil made me do it” is far too often used to excuse our own bad choices.
The devil cannot make us do anything. The devil is worthy of blame for much of the evil in the world but using the devil as a scapegoat for our own sinful choices is counterproductive to achieving victory over sin.
James 1:14 declares, “Each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his desire” Why do we sin? We are plagued by and infected with sin says Romans 3:10-23. While demonic oppression and influence are real, the primary problem is our sinful natures. “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these” listed in Galatians 5:19-21. Notice, it says the “works of the flesh” in this list, not the work of the devil.
Christians, have the Holy Spirit to help overcome sin in 1 John 4:4. If we sin, we have no excuse. We cannot blame the devil. We cannot blame our circumstances. We can only blame ourselves. And, until we recognize that the problem resides within us says Romans 7:20, we will never arrive at the solution.
The devil made me do it! I couldn’t help myself! I don’t know why I did! These are all tricks of the enemy, if you are a Christian who keeps sinning, the devil did not make you do it. He may have tempted you to do it. He may have even influenced you, but he did not make you do it. You always have a choice. God never allows you to be tempted beyond your ability to withstand, and He always provides a way of escape declares 1 Corinthians 10:13. A Christian saying “the devil made me do it” is denying the truth of 1 John 4:4. Do not give the enemy any more room or opportunity to deceive you, take back your authority and self-control and say no when temptation comes.
Shalom
