Ecclesiastes 3:7 (WEB)
a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak.
The mouth! The instrument for communication takes no break, holiday, or stops for a second.
Shh!
We hear that a lot, adults telling children to be quiet, the librarian telling the noisy library user, or just about somebody telling another to be silent for whatever reason.
Unfortunately, the mouth is never silent. We speak when we should be silent and sadly end up uttering words that should be best left unsaid.
According to Proverbs 10:19, there are a lot of risks of sin involved in constant talking, it is impossible for someone who can’t keep silent to not sin or defame another because foolish words would be spoken at some point, hence, the warning to be silent, to show wisdom, exampled by David in Psalm 39:1 who guarded his mouth with a muzzle to avoid sinning and uttering vain words. Even the foolish are thought wise if they keep silent, according to Proverbs 17:28.
Some people can’t endure silence, they like chatter, if not theirs’, then it’s the TV, radio, something must be talking around them.
Must we speak all the time? Yap! Yap! Chatter! Chatter! Meaningless talk does not make one look smart, intelligent, or wise. The less said, the better.
We, do the same in prayer. We talk so much and so loudly that God can’t get a word edgewise. We sometimes talk over Him and then we say, “God doesn’t speak to me”. How can He? When you don’t give Him time to do so. We must be still, be silent in God’s presence to know His will according to Psalm 40:10.
Lamentation 3:26 says we must wait quietly on the Lord in prayer and expectation, in deliverance, danger, not salvation.
The Shunammite woman in 2 Kings 4 traveled in silence to Carmel to see Elisha, her silence was golden, as she didn’t want to abort her faith with worthless speech. Some of us need to learn to be silent, especially when we’re trusting the Lord for His promises toward us because our incessant speech may express doubt, unbelief, or just might end in aborting the vision and expectations.
James 3:8 says no one can control the tongue (the mouth) and Psalm 141:3 reiterates that we must watch our mouths, requiring us to guard the power of the mouth against contradicting the word of God, it goes further to say to set a guard over our mouths and to keep watch on the door of our lips. SSSHH!
Silence is golden!
There is a time to be silent! Silence is golden! A time to allow the mouth to rest from the toil of many speeches.
A time to hear others, to hear the Lord, and for the digestion of the already received words as put in Jeremiah 15:16, if you’re eating, especially the word of God, you cannot speak at the same time.
Be silent! It’s only when we are silent that the Lord can fight our battles for us according to Exodus 14:14.
Our words can be a snare to us and an opportunity for the enemy to hold us, even the Lord will justify us by our words according to Matthew 12:36.
Let’s learn to be silent when the occasion calls for silence according to Lamentation 3:28. Let silence prevail to save us.
Shh!
Silence is golden!
