SUSTAINING HOPE

Psalm 119:116 ESV
Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live, and let me not be put to shame in my hope!

Hope is the desire for some good, accompanied by an expectation of obtaining it, or the belief that it is obtainable, an expectation of something thought to be desirable, confident and pleasing with expectancy.
The Hebrew word for Hope occurs approximately forty times and means “wait (for),” and “hope (for).” Waiting is often with the sense of expectant anticipation, with the underlying sense of “hope” in expectation of a particular result.
Psalm 31:24 says the Lord is trusting that His people, will take courage and not despair, then He will repay their hopes for it shan’t be in vain.
Hope in God does not come naturally for sinners like us. We must preach it to ourselves, and preach diligently and forcefully, or we will give way to a downcast and disquieted spirit.
Psalm 42:5 is the soul arguing with itself, preaching to itself. “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God!”
Think for a moment of a prisoner on death row, an offer comes for pardon, his hope will be revived, the hope of freedom, of life and joy. We are that prisoner! Spiritual prisoners are destined for death row but with an offer of spiritual and supernatural pardon, God offers the ultimate hope by forgiving us according to Zechariah 9:12.
When life becomes impossible, God brings eternal hope which is essential to our perseverance and getting through tough times as our hope according to Psalm 71:5.
Without hope, we give up on hope!
Hannah was in deep anguish, crying bitterly for a child, amid her hopelessness, she prayed to God knowing that her hope was only in God, the God of Israel in 1 Samuel 1:1-28 and her hope was rewarded.
Paul and Silas were on death row for preaching about Jesus, yet in a hopeless situation, right inside the prison, they sang and praised God because their perspective was eternal and not earthly which greatly strengthen their hope in Acts 16:16-34.
No matter how hopeless a situation gets, there is a word for it, things will always get hopeless on earth, but Christ is the ultimate, eternal hope of glory according to Colossians 1:27.
Let’s fear God more than life as that will secure our eternity in Christ. According to Proverbs 10:28, it’s that hope that gives believers joy.
We know the realities of today’s economy – social uneasiness, medical crisis, chaos, and gloomy forecasts for the days ahead, sustaining hope through these times will be a major task, even for the most optimistic. Sustaining hope means being encouraged when everyone else is discouraged. It means keeping your head up and showing faith even when situations look their darkest.
Abraham did not weaver in his faith and hope in God’s promises says Romans 4:18, neither should we.
We should not lose hope and faith in the face of impossibilities, improbabilities, inadequacies, insecurities, and inconsistencies, for the Lord is the opposite of all these things and He’s able to make all grace abound for us to keep hope and faith through the Holy Spirit according to Romans 5:2-5.
Who but God controls the future? Who but God has a home for us in eternity? That’s why God is our hope. Chin up! Hope in God for sustenance!
Shalom
