FOCUS!

Luke 9:59
And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

Focus is to concentrate on or to pay attention to something or someone. The direct absorption we give to something by fixing one’s gaze on a specific target with total interest.
Jesus gave a clear command and invitation to this man, as he does us, but he had a reasonable and valid excuse for not obeying the master.
What are you focusing on?
Our focus may be on something reasonable and valid but not necessarily timely and kingdom focus. Burying a parent is important, and the scriptures encourage honouring one’s parents seen in Matthew 15:1–9 but Jesus knew that this man’s request was merely an excuse not to follow him. Burial at that time in Judaism often involved a year-long period from the time when the body was first buried until a year later when the bones of the deceased were placed in a box.
The cost of following the Lord is huge and demands total focus, Jesus’s response may sound harsh, but it is to pass on the truth mentioned in verse 62 that following him means a total and radical shift of loyalty from everything and everyone else to him.
We reject the Lord daily when our focus shifts from him to everything else.
We focus on jobs, business, family, leisure, career and even ministry without considering the impact these make on our spiritual race. Colossians 3:2 says to focus our attention on eternal, spiritual and kingdom things, and not earthly things. The human mind is deep and easily distracted, we are encouraged to focus on things that will affect us positively and honour the Lord, that will mean keeping our gaze on Jesus constantly as stated in Hebrew 12:2 since he knows and cares for us, he, therefore, wants us to follow in his steps and go where he wants us with nothing standing in our ways as limitations and distractions which will give us an excuse to not focus on God.
We must learn to focus on the things that matter the most, things that are not always visible or pleasing and not on things that will derail, detain, or distract us from both the spiritual and important journey of life.
What do you focus on? How we see things matters because it’s how and what we see, that determines what we focus on.
Jesus, using the opportunity presented by the sons of Zebedee asking for recognition and platform in Mark 10:35-45, teaches us not to focus on positions, prominence, and positions, especially for ourselves, as we see the disciples’ reaction to this; their focus was more on the greatness the position gives rather than on the Lord and his kingdom.
What’s your focus?
Moses sends out twelve spies in Numbers 13-14 and on their return ten gives what God called an evil report and only two gave a good report. Why? Focus! Ten focused on what they saw, the reality, the physical evidence while the other two focused on God’s promise.
When we don’t focus on the word of God and His promises plans for us, we may end up destroying ourselves like the Israelites or delaying our progress by focusing on the wrong things.
Focus on God and follow the path that leads to life and godliness.
Shalom
