MIZPAH: GOD THE WITNESS.

Genesis 31:45–49 (ESV)
45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar. 46 And Jacob said to his kinsmen, “Gather stones.” And they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there by the heap.
47 Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob called it Galeed.
48 Laban said, “This heap is a witness between you and me today.” Therefore he named it Galeed,
49 and Mizpah, for he said, “The LORD watch between you and me, when we are out of one another’s sight.

Witness! A person who sees an event and reports or documents it. God is the witness. Mizpah has a double name assigned to it- “this heap is a witness” and “watchtower.” Because Laban and Jacob could not agree on anything, they decided to make a covenant pact but chose to make God the witness who would judge any breach in their covenant.
A witness refers generally to something or someone that bears testimony to things seen, heard, transacted, or experienced. A witness is also a person who sees the execution of a will for the purpose of confirming its authenticity.
The Bible prescribes that at least two witnesses are required to establish any charge, accusation or sentencing according to Numbers 35:30.
Laban could neither justify himself nor condemn Jacob for his actions but desired to hear no more of the matter at hand. He wasn’t willing to own up to his fault in the breakdown of their relationship, as he ought to have done just like many of us. But he proposes a covenant of friendship between them, to which Jacob readily agrees. A heap of stones was raised, to keep up the memory of the event.
In ancient times covenants of friendship were settled by the parties eating and drinking together which Laban and Jacob also did, partaking of the feast after the sacrifice. God is a judge, and He will judge between contending parties, and He judges righteously because He is the righteous judge, who does no wrong, impartial, and fair.
Jacob and Laban then gave a new name to the place and parted as friends. God is often better to us than our fears, and overrules the spirits of men in our favour, beyond what we could have expected; for it is not in vain to trust in him.
As your witness, God can influence man, systems, circumstances and nature for His purpose and for you as He influenced Laban to make reconciliation with the injured Jacob, giving both peace as seen in Proverbs 16:7.
God is the witness in every area of our lives-health, family, marriage, career, and life in general and God will always refresh us for the journey ahead.
The hand of God is the witness of regulation, God takes the responsibility of executing the office of a witness by orchestrating events to safeguard against false evidence, testifying according to 1 John 5:7 for the saints.
We are to take difficult cases to the supreme court of heaven for judicature, the court of heaven is to sit at the central sanctuary of every believer’s life, irrespective of the circumstances and events.
Samuel was a man of prayer but even he recognised that the judicial system of God was higher than that of man- Samuel encouraged the Israelites to come before the righteous judge in confession and repentance at Mizpah where God will witness their resolutions according to 1 Samuel 7:5-7. Samuel, acting as both the human judge and prophet was to intercede for them.
Jonathan acknowledged and appointed God as the witness between him and David in something that was both a personal and judicial case in 1 Samuel 20:42.
God is still the witness-whatever the case, let Him be the one who arbitrates on your behalf.
Shalom
