1 Peter 2:17 (AMP)
Show respect for all men [treat them honorably]. Love the brotherhood (the Christian fraternity of which Christ is the Head). Reverence God. Honor the emperor.
Respect, just a little bit! A line in Aretha Franklin’s RESPECT is one of the most desired things but the most overlooked and held back.
Respect is to recognize someone else’s worth, honouring them for who they are, it is a gift you confer on someone, a gift of high value.
To respect and honour others requires humility on our part because it means making others look good without trying to make ourselves look good or better at the same time.
The first and second commandments tell us to honour God above His name. The ninth tell us to show respect to God and others which is the heartbeat of the ten commandments.
David had respect for Saul even as Saul was trying to kill him. Although Saul was in a state of sin and rebellion against God, David still respected the position he held as God’s anointed king in 1 Samuel 24:5-7. David knew he would be king one day, he also knew that it was not right to strike down the man God had placed on the throne.
We are to respect the authority of the leaders God has placed in our lives, it is our Christian duty to respect the positions and roles of those to whom God has given authority, spiritual, and otherwise according to Romans 13:1-7. God will always be the highest authority, and no one should force us to violate God’s law.
The body of Christ has become so familiar with the office of God’s servants that we’ve coined all kinds of names for them and sometimes even call them by name. We do not call our doctors, teachers, bosses or even some colleagues by name but we merrily choose to call servants of God by their names or “Brother or sister,” for whatever reason, see Matthew 10:41.
Deuteronomy 1:17 says to respect everyone. Not only the bold, rich or mighty and not to look down on the poor man. Sadly, our society today only respects beautiful people.
There is a certain type of false humility that exists in the body of Christ where we disregard men of God and fail to honour them believing that it is not important to do so. They believe that it is enough to respect God. But as much as we respect God, God himself honours His prophets and expects His people to do the same, see 1 Chronicles 20:20. We cannot respect God without honouring the people God has placed over our lives. We attack “God’s anointed,” speak ill of them and treat them badly but get upset when the same is done to us, David said in 2 Samuel 1:14 that it’s wrong to attack God’s anointed, this should be our sentiments to those in authority over us.
To respect everyone, believers must be conscious that God has created us all in His image, regardless of whether they believe in Christ. We should show them proper respect and honour because their souls are of more value than all the wealth in the world like in Luke 10:33–34.
We should show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honour the king, all men, and governmental authorities. Interestingly, today we tend to place our values on our rights and the equality of man.
Respect God, respect yourself, respect servants of God, and respect others according to Romans 12:10.
Shalom
