VANITY FAIR 2!

Ecclesiastes 1:2 (Darby)
Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities! all is vanity.

There is a section of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s progress called vanity fair, for trade-in tawdry products, and the worship of Beelzebub, one of the rebel angels against God in the army of Lucifer. At Vanity Fair, Faithful and Christian are mocked, smeared with dirt, and thrown in a cage. Given a chance to repent, they stay true to their righteous hatred of worldly possessions.
Do we ever get to the point where, as a believer, we look at the world around us and righteous indignation rises in us over the things going on in our societies?
Vanity refers to the emptiness or worthlessness of the soul. It may also signify worldly pride and conceit. Vanity Fair is where worldly people display pride and engage in foolish and meaningless activities, the kind of activities that degrades, corrupt and pervert social habits and characteristic tendencies.
Psalm 119:37 says to turn our eyes from beholding vanity, vanity may be an idol, worldly pleasure, beauty, finery; anything that is vain, empty, or transitory. Let me not behold it; let me not dwell upon it. Let me remember Achan: like Achan, the lust of the eyes-he saw, the lust of the heart-he coveted, and the lust of the mind—he took, although, he tried to hide his sin, and was slain for his it, unfortunately along with all that belongs to him.
Nobody goes to or remain in vanity fair alone, some trade there, others buy, while others provide services. Because the love of money increases, in proportion as money itself increases as Ecclesiastes 5:10 puts it, the one that loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver—The more he gets, the more he would get.
There are all kinds of evil, wickedness, depravity, and sin in vanity fair. Often, things normally frowned upon by society are flagrantly on offer in vanity fair with governmental endorsement as an offer of community service.
How low has society fallen that communities have endorsed things like suicide forest in Japan, suicide hotels all over the world, locking humans in cages and treating them as pets become community service?
In vanity fair everything is vanity because nothing in vanity fair is lasting, nothing is beneficial to the spirit, soul, and body according to 1 Timothy 4:8.
There is an appropriate description in Job 15:29-35 of those who dwell in vanity fair, no matter how enticing, fun-filled and satisfying it is living in vanity fair, the eventual price is going to be too high for anyone to pay-death, as Romans 6:23 puts it. The meaninglessness and emptiness of vanity fair soon quickly fill the heart and soul of those living within its borders.
Sadly, so many believers are dabbling and frolicking in vanity fair and call it enjoyment and fun, forgetting what Proverbs 4:14-15 advises against, which is that we should avoid the way of the wicked because it creates a destructive hunger that cannot be satisfied.
Yet that enjoyment and fun are fleeting, they are all vanity.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:33, “for what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul.” which means that most pursuits in life, especially in vanity fair are vain pursuits. All is vanity!
Shalom
